How to Split Expenses Fairly With Roommates and Friends
A simple system for tracking shared costs, splitting unevenly when needed and settling up without arguments.
Agree on the rules early
Decide what is shared, such as rent, groceries, internet and electricity, and what is personal. Agree whether everything is split equally or by usage. Talking about it early prevents resentment later.
Record every shared cost
Note who paid, how much and who shared it. Doing it on the same day avoids forgotten items, and a shared tool lets everyone see the same numbers.
Equal or uneven splits
Equal splits are simplest. If one person did not eat at the shared dinner or uses a room more, split that item among only those involved. An expense tool can handle different shares per item.
Settle up regularly
Once a week or once a month, work out who owes whom. The best approach is to minimise the number of payments, so three people owing each other small amounts becomes one or two transfers.
Set a monthly budget
Add up your fixed costs and what you can spend freely. Seeing the numbers early shows how much you can afford to spend on food, travel and fun in the month.
